A Legend In Atlanta Radio: WABE’s Steve Goss Retires

Brenna Beech/WABE

Listen to Steve Goss sign off for the last time from “Morning Edition.”

WABE listeners heard, “This is Morning Edition. I’m Steve Goss,” for the last time Friday.

These words capped a career of almost 40 years informing and entertaining Atlanta. For the last eight years, Goss has been the host of WABE’s Morning Edition.

A Rhode Island native, Goss got his master’s degree from Emory University in 1976 and began his career as a teacher at Woodward Academy in College Park. But he soon figured out he needed a bigger classroom.

Goss interned as a writer and producer at Atlanta’s news/talk station WGST, then took a job at sister station WPCH. There at “Peach,” he worked his way up from announcer to program director.

When he’s not on the air, Goss is a quiet guy, always self-deprecating, with a demeanor that belies his intelligence and quick wit. WABE has been lucky to have Goss lead us through the morning hours. It’s an understatement to say he has “great pipes,” as we say in radio. But it doesn’t take long to recognize the depth of knowledge that comes with the years Goss has served all of Atlanta.

Goss’ tenure on the air and extensive community service have been recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Atlanta Achievement in Radio (A.I.R. Awards) and the March of Dimes. In 2013, he was named a Career Achievement Inductee to the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame.

You may have seen the bumper stickers that say, “Goss is my co-pilot.” For thousands of us, that has been true each weekday morning. WABE wishes Goss nothing but clear skies going forward. He is a true legend in Atlanta radio.
