License plate readers assist with arrests in Gwinnett County

Gwinnett County police say several new license plate readers have helped the department make a number of arrests. The camera devices are mounted on several of the department's patrol cars and can scan up to 1,800 license plates per minute.

Gwinnett police Cpl. Jake Smith says the devices then compare the images of those tags with millions of records and alert officers when there are vehicles of interest.

“It's been very successful in helping us locate persons with warrants and also recovering stolen vehicles, and it's led to several other arrests just from investigations into things like expired an tag or a vehicle with no insurance.”

Smith says in November the readers scanned more than 300,000 license plates. As a result of those scans, authorities located four stolen vehicles and 55 people wanted by police.
