Loehmann’s To Shutter All Stores, Incluing Two Atlanta Spots

Jill Rosenberg says she heard about Loehmann’s closing when her daughter, Jill Talbot, emailed her about it Thursday morning. As heard on the radio

She said she’s shopped at the discount retailer for 50 years – since she was a teenager. So as a sort of last hurrah, the mother-daughter duo decided to spend their lunch break at the Loehmann’s off Briarcliff Road in Atlanta.

“This is a thing we do, so we had to do it one last time,” Rosenberg said. “We came here for her prom dresses and …”

“Graduation dresses,” Talbot chimed in, “wedding dresses. All the life events bring us here.”

After nearly 93 years in business, Loehmann’s announced Thursday it would begin closing all 39 of its stores immediately, including two stores in the metro-Atlanta area – the Briarcliff Road location and another in Dunwoody.

The New York-based retailer filed for bankruptcy protection for a third and final time in December, citing limited access to capital and more competition in the off-price retail market.

Donna Fields, who also stopped by the Briarcliff Road spot to check out the sale, said she was devastated to hear the news.

“Because I’ve been a shopper at Loehmann’s for over 30 years, and I’ve loved it always, and I go to all the locations,” Fields said. “And if I’m in another city and see one, I’d definitely want to go in because I could always find something there, so I’m very disappointed.”

The company says more than $65 million of inventory will be liquidated during the sale.
