Mayor Reed Promises Continued Fight Against Climate Change

National action on climate change is likely out the window with Donald Trump’s win, but Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed says the city will keep up its own work.

Atlanta has green requirements for city buildings and is putting solar panels on some of them. It’s adding electric vehicles to its fleet. And it requires large commercial buildings to track their energy and water use.

“There are so many things that cities can do that don’t have anything to do with state governments or federal governments,” Reed said. “I really don’t think, as tough as the politics are nationally, that folks are going to stop cities from doing what we can do on climate.”

Last year, Reed went to the Paris climate talks, where countries hashed out an agreement that went into effect last week.

Trump has said he will withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

Reed said he thinks eventually climate change will become less politicized.

“The weather is going to make the decision, not politics,” he said. “People aren’t crazy.”
