Atlanta planners are working on a new region-wide bike and pedestrian plan. The idea is to encourage Atlantans to get out of their cars when they can.

“We have the longest average driving commutes of any metropolitan in the country, just over 12 miles” said Byron Rushing, bike and pedestrian planner at the Atlanta Regional Commission. “That’s not a trip that we can expect people to jump on their bike the next day and go ride on.”

But, said Rushing, there are ways to add biking and walking trips during the day, for example, if a person drives to work, then walks to lunch.

Some of the recommendations in the ARC’s draft plan are to expand and connect existing bike trails, to focus on areas where there is a high desire for walking and biking and to emphasize safety.

The ARC is collecting public comments on the plan until Friday.
