Ayoka Chenzira is a veteran transmedia storyteller. She enjoys trying out new ideas and figuring them out as she goes. With that approach, she has used imagination, creativity and innovation across several genres, including fiction, animation, documentaries, experimental narratives, sci-fi and fantasy.

Chenzira, an award-winning filmmaker, television director and digital media artist, is noted as a pioneer in Black independent cinema. Among her long list of achievements includes being credited as one of the first Black women to write, produce and direct a 35-millimeter feature film.

As a featured guest for the Women’s History Month series, “Piloting the Journey,” she talked with show host Rose Scott about her expansive career of more than four decades. She also talked about why she believes it’s important to rest, her latest venture of adapting photographs into NFTs and the unwavering faith she has in things she wants to do next.

“I am very centered in the aha moments for me, that I can then share with other people,” explained Chenzira.
