Friday on “Closer Look with Rose Scott”:
- 00:00: Rose Scott gives a news brief with more details on the gift philanthropist Robert Smith pledged to give the Morehouse College Class of 2019.
- And, in other news, some metro Atlanta youth walked out of school today to protest “government inaction” on climate change.
- 02:32: Dr. Daniel S. Blumenthal is remembered for his commitment to bringing quality health care to underserved areas of Atlanta. The founding chair of the Department of Community Health and Preventative Medicine at the Morehouse School of Medicine passed away this year at the age of 77-years old. This weekend, there will be a memorial service in his honor at the Morehouse School of Medicine. His colleagues, Dr. Elizabeth Ofili, Professor of Medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine and Chief Medical Officer Morehouse Choice Accountable Care Organization; Dr. Beverly Taylor, Chair of the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine; and Dr. Tabia Henry Akintobi, Professor and Associate Dean of Community Health and Preventive Medicine; as well as Dr. Blumenthal’s wife and Executive Director of Clinical Research Pathways, Dr. Marjorie Speers, join “Closer Look” in studio in his remembrance.
- 20:17: We continue yesterday’s conversation with Atticus LeBlanc, founder of the co-living startup PadSplit. Today, we hear from current PadSplit residents, and learn more about why LeBlanc believes his business could serve as an affordable housing solution.
- 41:26: From Sept. 5 to Nov. 30, 2018, researchers at Austin Public Health, with help from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tracked 936,110 e-scooter rides around the city. They found for every 100,000 trips taken, 20 individuals were injured. Jeff Taylor, Senior Epidemiologist at Austin Public Health and Jason JonMichael, Assistant Director of Smart Mobility with the Transportation Department, join “Closer Look” by phone to discuss their findings and how other cities, like Atlanta, could use this data to promote safer streets.

Editor’s note: This post has been updated to note Robert Mayberry, professor and vice chair of the Department of Community Health and Preventative Medicine, was not a part of the roundtable on the legacy of Dr. Blumenthal. An earlier version of this article said he took part in the roundtable.
