Closer Look: The Proposed City of Eagles’ Landing; Local Researchers Address State Climate Issues; And More

June 4, 2018

Monday on “Closer Look with Rose Scott”:

  • 0:00: The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) has filed a lawsuit against the City of Atlanta and current City Council President, Felicia Moore. According to the lawsuit, the ordinance approving the annexation of Emory University was changed to favor the Atlanta Public Schools tax revenue base. Rose speaks to DeKalb County Schools Superintendent Dr. Stephen Green to learn more.
  • 6:51: Eagle’s Landing is the latest community in Georgia looking to become its own city. Currently, the area is part of the City of Stockbridge and unincorporated Henry County. Governor Nathan Deal recently signed legislation to put the cityhood of Eagle’s Landing up for a vote in November. The Eagle’s Landing Educational Research Committee has been behind the effort. In part one of a two-part series of conversations on this proposed city, we hear from Vikki Consiglio, who chairs the committee.
  • 27:32: Friday was the one year anniversary of President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord. Since then, many states and cities have said they will continue to honor the agreement. Here in Georgia, a new consortium of university researchers is working to address the state’s most pertinent climate-related issues — it’s called the Georgia Climate Project, and it just published it’s first ‘roadmap’ for addressing climate change. We’re joined by members of the Georgia Climate Project Daniel Rochberg, Chief Strategy Officer for Emory University’s Climate@Emory Initiative, Dr. Marilyn Brown, Regents Professor in the School of Public Policy at the Georgia Institute of Technology and  Dr. Marshall Shepherd, Director for the Program in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Georgia.
  • 45:05: Following the Trump’s administration’s decision last week to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum for Canada, Mexico and the European Union, we look at the potential impact on the US markets with Tom Smith, associate professor of finance at Emory’s Goizueta Business School.

Closer Look is produced by Candace Wheeler, Emilia Brock and Trevor Young.
