Many of the great treasures of Black American history originate in Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn district – and only Atlanta can rise to the challenge of preserving these legacies.

Gene Kansas is an author, real estate developer and preservationist who painstakingly researched Sweet Auburn, its most famous sites, including the Ebenezer Baptist Church and Butler Street YMCA, Atlanta’s “Black City Hall,” and others that have not been preserved and live on only in stories and archives.

Kansas joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes to discuss his passion for Atlanta history and preservation, as well as his new book, “Civil Sights: Sweet Auburn, a Journey through Atlanta’s National Treasure.”

“This was a neighborhood where people could come together and thrive, but it was also for protection,” said Kansas.
