Imam Plemons T. El-Amin says he never met his mother’s brother, his late uncle Dennis Hubert. He says his uncle died before he was born. El-Amin says his mother didn’t talk about her brother. However, he believes his mother was concerned about his safety because of what happened to his uncle.
On the evening of June 15, 1930, a mob lynched Hubert. At the time of his death, he was a sophomore at Morehouse College. In May, Hubert will be posthumously awarded an honorary bachelor of arts degree during the commencement ceremony.
On Monday’s edition of “Closer Look,” El-Amin and Ann Hill Bond, an Atlanta-based journalist and chair of the Fulton County Remembrance Coalition, talked more about Hubert’s life, and the legacy of Hubert’s mother, an educator, who served as a principal of the Crogmsn School, where Hubert was lynched.
