Zainab Hashem moved to Atlanta with her husband and son in 2012. To move from Baghdad they went through the red tape you’d expect but their dog Tito’s paperwork ran into complications.

Tito would be traveling separately to the United States and would be held in New York City.

Zainab sat down with her friend Alta Schwartz at the StoryCorps Atlanta booth to describe the adventure of traveling alone to New York City, after having been in the country for only 10 days.

This story was produced locally by Stephen Key and recorded in partnership with The Atlanta History Center, which hosts Atlanta’s StoryCorps booth. To book a time with a loved one or friend go to WABE.org/storycorps.
