Roswell Memorial Remembers Area’s Cherokee History

This year marks the 175th anniversary of the Trail of Tears, which was the forced relocation of Native Americans from their land. Before their removal, many of the Cherokee people lived in what is now Roswell, Georgia. The story of the Cherokees in the area is one that author Cindi Crane is trying to bring to light.

Crane worked with the Roswell Historical Society’s Johanna Harned to create a memorial for the Cherokee at Roswell’s Riverside Park. The memorial is made up of eight boulders placed throughout the park, and each one tells part of the Cherokee’s story. We recently visited Riverside Park to speak with Crane and Harned. Host John Lemley started by asking Crane about what inspired the idea for the memorial.

Broadcast version of the story that originally aired on November 26th, 2014.
