Thursday marked a historic moment for Spelman College. The all women’s liberal arts intuition announced it received a $100 million donation.

The private gift from Spelman College Trustee Ronda Stryker and her husband, William Johnston, the Chairman of Greenleaf Trust, is the single largest gift that any HBCU has ever received.

According to a statement from the school, $75 million of the funding will go toward scholarships, and the remaining $25 million will be used to improve student housing, develop an academic focus on public policy and democracy, and fund other strategic needs of the college.

On Thursday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Juma Sei, WABE’s education reporter, talked with Rose Scott to discuss the historic gift and its impact.
