Stacey Abrams To Appear On TIME Cover

Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams is running for governor of Georgia and will face Republican Brian Kemp when Georgians go to the polls Nov. 6.

Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams will appear on the cover of TIME in August, the news magazine announced on Twitter. She will be featured in a special issue on the American South.

TIME’s new cover story on Abrams talks about her family, her platform and shares anecdotes from her political career.

Writer Molly Ball shared how Abrams once helped a Republican legislator better explain his bill, even though she ended up voting against it. Afterward, other Republicans asked Abrams to look at their bills, she told TIME. Even though they didn’t always agree with her, Abrams told TIME that they knew that they could trust her.

In addition to Abrams, TIME’s special issue, out Aug. 6, features stories on Georgia’s film industry, multicultural Southern food and other influential people who are changing the South.

Some influential Georgians featured were the African-American women who run the city of South Fulton’s municipal court, dubbed “The South Fulton Eight.” First reported by The Atlanta Voice, the story of these women went viral and was picked up by other media outlets.

Other featured Georgians were Chuck Reece, editor of The Bitter Southerner, and Paula Wallace, the founding president of the Savannah College of Art and Design.

TIME also profiled Kevin “Coach K” Lee and Pierre “Pee” Thomas. They’re the founders of the Atlanta-based record label, Quality Control Music, which is reportedly one of the most successful indie record labels in the music industry, according to its website. The record label has worked with artists like The Migos, Jonny Cinco and Young Greatness.

Restaurateur Meherwan Irani was also mentioned. He created a mini restaurant empire in Georgia and North Carolina, says TIME’s Mahita Gajanan. That mini empire includes Chai Pani in Decatur and Botiwalla in Atlanta.

“The South is a place of more diversity and forward motion than many assume, a reality reflected in the stories of the extraordinary group of contributors to this issue, all of whom have intimate connections to the region,” TIME’s Edward Felsenthal wrote in an article about the special issue.
