Stone Mountain Mayor Beverly Jones called a press conference on June 3 where she defended her decision to take control of the city’s bank accounts but declined to take questions, citing pending litigation.

“So today, I tell you, I stood up and did what was asked of me, to protect the city,” Jones said during the conference held at St. Paul AME Church in Stone Mountain.

Jones is accused of taking control of both the city’s bank accounts and the Downtown Development Authority’s accounts without informing anyone. Mayor Pro Tem Smith and Councilmember Crowe were listed as signatories on the city’s accounts, and Jones allegedly removed them. At a special meeting on Friday, May 30, Jones signed the signature cards reinstating Smith and Crowe as signatories on the city’s bank account.
