Along with maintaining physical health during this time, mental health is essential as well.

Mental health professionals are recommending that people take just 15 minutes out of the day to meditate. A regular routine of mindfulness can help us maneuver through these unsettling times.

“City Lights” producer Summer Evans spoke via Zoom with Atlanta yoga instructor and artist Eve Brown.

Yoga is an ancient tradition of mental and physical practices originating in India. It embodies philosophy, meditation, breathing techniques, behavioral disciplines and physical exercise.

“The classes we take are a stepping stone into what yoga is really for, which is unifying the self, yoking the self. Yoga means to yoke, to unify. So historically, that’s what it has been used for, to yoke with your inner self, but also to unify with the greater Self,” Brown said.

Yoga has evolved over time to include strength building and be an outlet for exercise. Brown believes yoga offers something deeper than just physical benefits.

“I think when yoga came over to the United States, and in order for it to be accepted by people, they purposely made it this thing that was all about the asanas and contorting the body to gain popularity. It seems that when it came to the United States, it was about the physical movements. I think it has a lot to do with the differences between our Western culture and where the roots of yoga come from. We are a culture that is geared more toward the outer, the external … learning how to slow your practice down and allowing the mind to really go down into the body is when yoga goes from being purely physical to being the psycho-spiritual science that it is,” Brown said.
