‘The Wrath of Con’ At Dad’s Garage Celebrates Finding Community

At Dad’s Garage, an audience favorite returns.

“Wrath of Con” is a tribute to sci-fi and fantasy fans everywhere. It follows five friends on an adventure through a weekend at the sci-fi convention “Dragon Con.”

The show’s creator, Jon Carr and actor Whittney Millsap joined Lois Reitzes to talk about the play.

The show came about based on Carr’s and his fellow Dad’s Garage colleagues experiences attending Dragon Con for the past fifteen years. Carr mentions how at home the Dad’s Garage team felt at the the convention,”You feel weird when you’re an artist, but we felt that we fit in.”

The audience seems to appreciate that sense of belonging as well. “There’s always a huge turn out and I think that is because it speaks to people on such a human level. It’s really a play about humanity and how we are a herd animal and want to fit in. I think the show really speaks to people. I forgot that one of my favorite characters in the show is the audience because its so interactive,” Millsap said.

Carr spoke of how people turn to superheroes in difficult times.

“Whenever America has been in trouble or people have been afraid, you see a rise in comic books. The golden age of comic books was World War II. When people feel unsure of themselves, they turn to stories of good conquering evil. That’s what this show is about, those human beings who need those superheroes to save them mentally.”

“Wrath of Con” will be onstage at Dad’s Garage’s Theatre in the Old Fourth Ward, Thursday July 18-27 at 8 p.m.
