Tony Award-Winning Musical ‘La Cage Aux Folles’ Showing In Atlanta

“La Cage aux Folles” transports audiences back to a drag nightclub on the French Riviera.
Out Front Theatre is presenting the musical at 999 Brady Ave. NW, Atlanta until Nov. 9.
In the play, Georges owns a nightclub called La Cage aux Folles, and his partner, Albin, is the star of the show. Georges’ biological son, Jean-Michel, comes home and announces he’s marrying a woman with ultra-conservative parents. Jean-Michel begs his dad to present a more “traditional” family unit and asks Albin to take on a more masculine persona. Instead of adhering to hetero-normative standards, Albin takes his acting skills and creativity to a whole new level.
“City Lights” host Lois Reitzes spoke with director Paul Conroy and actor Clint Clark about the Tony Award-winning musical.
“With the conservative parents of Anne, the bride-to-be, and with the extremely liberal parents of the son … I think with the political climate we’re in, it’s still very relatable. I know personally I have family that I don’t see eye-to-eye with politically, and we are at opposite ends of the spectrum. But you have to come together, and sometimes you don’t come together, which the parents don’t necessarily come together in this show,” Clark said about “La Cage aux Folles’” relevancy almost 40 years since the play debuted.
“I think when it was written, it was playing on Broadway to a tourist crowd and there was a lot of the outside looking in on this world,” Conroy said. “I think now there are people that can sit and watch the show and say ‘this is a couple who are just like us.’”
