UGA’s Johnny Isakson Center for Brain Science and Neurological Disorders to receive $5 million in federal funding

According to the Centers for Disease Control Prevention, Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease.

The movement disorder is more prevalent in older populations, research suggests that Parkinson’s disease increases from about 1% at age 60 to 4% by age 80.

In December of 2021, former Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson died at 76 after battling Parkinson’s.

On Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Anumantha Kanthasamy, a professor, researcher and the John H. “Johnny” Isakson chair for Parkinson’s research and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar, talked with program host Rose Scott about the University of Georgia receiving $5 million in federal funding for Parkinson’s research.

During the conversation, Kanthasamy discussed how the funding will be used along with symptoms, diagnosis and treatment for Parkinson’s disease.
