WABE’s Week In Review: The Atlanta-Area Massage Business Shootings

Tuesday’s shooting spree at three Atlanta-area massage businesses killed eight people:

Delaina Ashley Yaun

Xiaojie Tan

Daoyou Feng

Paul Andre Michels

Soon Chung Park

Hyun Jung Grant

Suncha Kim

Yong Ae Yue

Six of the eight killed were women of Asian descent. It has led many to call this a hate crime based on race, but authorities have yet to confirm that as they say they continue to investigate.

Hear former U.S. Attorney BJay Pak, who know represents at least one of the victim’s families, talk about why he thinks it is a race-based hate crime.

WABE’s “Closer Look” spent this week examining several angles of the shootings. In Wednesday’s episode, we heard the heartbreak and fear that so many live with.

Georgia state Sen. Michelle Au told us how this event has affected her and her family as well as the bigger systemic problems faced by Asian Americans, as we have seen a rise in attacks on the community.

By Friday, we were learning more about the incident and the victims. WABE’s Lisa Hagen spoke with Sam Whitehead about the latest details.

The suspect, a 21-year-old white man, is in custody in Cherokee County. He waived his arraignment earlier this week.
