One of the most uncertain primary seasons in recent electoral history in Georgia will, in numerous cases, take another month to come into focus.
With a flood of elected officials leaving the state legislature, the U.S. House and other posts — most to run for higher office — that left seats to fill and even more candidates throwing their hats into the ring to fill them.
Races from the top of the ballot to the bottom are going to June 16 runoffs, which are triggered when no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote. Here’s a look at how the races shook out after all was said and done on Tuesday night.
U.S. Senate
It will take more waiting for incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff to find out which Republican he’ll be facing in the general election. U.S. Rep. Mike Collins and former football coach Derek Dooley head to a runoff, with U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter left on the outside looking in.
Georgia Governor
Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms outperformed the polls and won the Democratic nomination outright on Tuesday. She’ll face either billionaire businessman Rick Jackson or Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, who will continue their war of words in the runoff.

Georgia Supreme Court
This was one of the few posts not affected by runoffs, with Justice Charlie Bethel narrowly beating attorney Miracle Rankin, and Justice Sarah Hawkins Warren handily beating former state Sen. Jen Jordan.
In another high-profile judicial race, Georgia Court of Appeals Judge Trenton Brown easily kept his seat after a matchup against Fulton County Deputy District Attorney Will Wooten.
U.S. House
Georgia’s U.S. House delegation will look a lot different come January. Two members (Carter in the 1st District in Coastal Georgia and Collins in the 10th District in East-Central Georgia) ran for U.S. Senate instead; one (Barry Loudermilk in the 11th District in Northwest Georgia) is not running for reelection; and one (David Scott in the 13th District in metro Atlanta) died last month during his reelection bid.
Jim Kingston won the GOP primary in the 1st District, while Democrats Joyce Griggs and Amanda Hollowell will go to a runoff to see who faces him. The Republican Carter won the 2024 race for this seat by 24 points.
State Rep. Houston Gaines won the Republican primary in the 10th District and will be the overwhelming favorite in a general election matchup against Democratic nurse and Army veteran Pam Delancy. Collins won the 2024 race for this seat by 26 points.
In another deep red U.S. House district, Democrat Chris Harden will face either John Cowan or Rob Adkerson, who went to a June runoff in the 11th District race. Loudermilk won the 2024 race by 33 points.
State Rep. Jasmine Clark is poised to take up the mantle from Scott in the 13th District. Clark outlasted five other candidates to win Tuesday’s race outright in this heavily blue district. She’ll face Republican Jonathan Chavez in the general election. A special election to fill the remainder of Scott’s term will take place in July.
Former district attorney Clay Fuller cemented his position in the 14th District seat, beating nine other candidates to win the GOP primary outright. He’ll face Democrat Shawn Harris in a rematch of their special election runoff from last month. Fuller beat Harris by a closer-than-expected 12 points in that race to fill the remainder of former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s term.
Statewide Offices
Both primaries in the lieutenant governor’s race are going to runoffs, with state Sens. John Kennedy and Greg Dolezal facing off on the GOP side and state Sen. Josh McLaurin facing former state Sen. Nabilah Parkes on the Democratic side.
The same will happen in the secretary of state’s race, with Tim Fleming facing Vernon Jones in the Republican primary runoff and Penny Brown Reynolds facing Dana Barrett in the Democratic runoff.
Democrat Tanya Miller will face Republican Brian Strickland in the general election matchup for attorney general.
Lydia Powell won the Democratic primary in the school superintendent’s race. The GOP primary was too close to call as of Wednesday afternoon. The incumbent Republican Richard Woods is hovering near 50% of the vote, with Fred Longgrear waiting in the wings for a runoff if Woods fails to win outright.
And in the headline local race of the night, former Fulton County Commissioner Mo Ivory is taking the incumbent Fulton Commission Chair Robb Pitts to a runoff. Fulton Commissioner Marvin Arrington placed third in the race.
The results for agriculture commissioner, insurance commissioner, labor commissioner and other statewide races, plus all the state House and Senate races in metro Atlanta, are on WABE’s election results page.
