GAE president Sid Chapman said Carter has the right vision for education. Carter said his plan, which is focused on funding, is simple.

“The first thing we must do is have a separate education budget, which will force the politicians in Atlanta to be politically accountable for the way that they do their job on education funding,” he said.

“Let’s call it what it is: it’s a gimmick,” said Deal campaign spokesperson Brian Robinson. “It’s been tried in other states, it’s been tried in Alabama, and they’re desperately trying to get away from it now because it’s been an abysmal failure as gimmicks always are.”

The GAE and Carter said Deal has underfunded education. Robinson said the governor has increased education spending every year he’s been in office, including an additional $500 million dollars added to the education budget this year.

The GAE tends to back Democratic candidates and has thrown its support behind Democratic state schools superintendent candidate Valarie Wilson. Robinson says teachers don’t necessarily vote as a bloc, and that Deal has plenty of support from educators.
