Georgia Voters Reject School Takeover Amendment One

Georgia voters rejected the constitutional amendment allowing state takeover of low-performing schools, according to the Associated Press

Amendment One, also known as the “school takeover plan,” would have allowed the state of Georgia to create an Opportunity School District to take over schools deemed “chronically failing,” according to a state rating system.

Gov. Nathan Deal touted the plan as a way to help some kids break the cycle of poverty. He also said the measure would break up what he called a monopoly by local school boards.

Some critics disagreed with the criteria for categorizing schools as failing and said the plan would interfere with local control of schools.
