Dr. Gyimah Whitaker knows the transformational power an educator can have on a student’s life.

Whitaker says her life could have taken a different path when her mother was murdered when she was a teenager.

But a teacher intervened and encouraged her to take a different route.

Fast forward to many years later, Whitaker was recently named the newest leader of the City Schools of  Decatur.

On Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” the veteran educator talked about her career path and her top goals for the district when she assumes her new role in July.

“This was the right step for me,” said Whitaker. “I have communicated often and widely that I consider the City Schools of Decatur as a gem.”
