Former Reed Campaign Operative Named In Bribery Documents

The Atlanta City Hall bribery scandal is bringing new names to the headlines.

E.R. “Elvin” Mitchell Jr. pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy charges for paying bribes to get city contracts; Charles Richards Jr. is charged with the same offense.

Another new name: Mitzi Bickers.

Bickers has not been charged with a crime, but she is evidently a focus of the federal bribery investigation. Hundreds of boxes of documents released by the city yesterday have her name on them. The documents are those the U.S. Justice Department requested as part of its probe.

Bickers, a former Atlanta Public Schools board member, ran Mayor Kasim Reed’s “get out the vote campaign” in 2009 and served as the city’s director of human services until 2013. She resigned after news came out that she failed to disclose outside income as a consultant while on the city payroll.

Now Bickers has her own consulting firm. But she has also had business partnerships with Mitchell, the owner a construction company who pleaded guilty to paying more than a million dollars in bribes.

Bickers did not return calls for comment.
