The bond of the eight players, who make up The B.E.S.T. Academy basketball team, stretches beyond basketball. The high schoolers have developed a brotherhood and a friendship. Their collective defensive chemistry could be a superpower.
Earlier this month, the team won the Class A Division I championship. B.E.S.T. Academy defeated Southwest Macon 62-57. The historic win marked the school’s first-ever state basketball championship.
On Wednesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” seven members of the team, B.E.S.T. Academy head basketball coach Brian Weeden, and assistant coach Mario Lemons talked with show host Rose Scott about preparing for the grueling schedule, which included playing teams out of state, conditioning and the final minutes of the game.
