Rep. ‘Able’ Mable Thomas On Running For John Lewis’ Seat

Several prominent Atlantans have formally expressed interest in filling the unexpired term of the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis.
Long time state Representative “Able” Mable Thomas leads the pack in experience.
Over the years, she’s served a total of 22 years in the legislature. Thomas is scheduled to leave office in January.
Her bid for the 5th Congressional seat is unique in that she believes everyone vying for the temporary position has the same good intention—-to ensure Lewis’ legacy and work remain intact.
Rep. Thomas however is hoping to fill the unexpired term herself.
Former Morehouse President Robert Franklin, former Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall and former State Rep. Keisha Waites are among those competing for the job.
The Special Election to fill the unexpired term is set for Sept. 29.
State Sen. Nikema Williams was selected by the Democratic Party run in November for a full, two-year term.
Thomas spoke to the host of WABE’s “Morning Edition” host Lisa Rayam, and said, “there was some unfinished work the Congressman was doing.”
And continued, “We need to get into “Good Trouble”.
Rep. Thomas said the person who takes the seat of Lewis, “I believe it is very important for that person to have had experience of being on the ground…what I call being grassroots. John Lewis fought for the little man.”
Thomas continued, “I think the voters in District 5 deserve representation. We are still going to be taxed in the same way. There are a lot of bills. We want representation in Congress because it is too important with the pandemic, and people’s lives.”
