Decatur’s First Official Juneteenth Celebration One Year After Confederate Monument Was Removed

Just days after President Joe Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth a national holiday, the Southern Poverty Law Center is calling for people across the country to liberate public spaces occupied by confederate monuments by gathering in those spaces on Juneteenth to celebrate progress.

Lecia Brooks, chief of staff for the SPLC, joined WABE’s “Morning Edition” to talk about the first official Juneteenth celebration organization held in Decatur — on the same spot where a confederate monument was removed one year ago.

Join us for #Decatur‘s first #Juneteenth celebration from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. June 19, 2021, at Decatur Square.

There you can meet activists like Fonta who have leveraged the power of community to bring justice to all. pic.twitter.com/mbGvWTv5C1
