Medu Bookstore, located in Greenbriar Mall in Southwest Atlanta, is one of a handful of stores that have stood the test of time as retail chains and big box stores have closed throughout the mall. But over the years, Medu, which means “Power of the Word,” has come to hold a special meaning for many within the community and beyond, as a hub for African American literature, culture and knowledge.
Now, after more than three decades, owner and founder Nia Damali announced she plans to close to the store in March.
Known to her friends and longtime customers as “Sister Nia,” Damali says she’s concerned about the gap that will be left in the city’s literary ecosystem after Medu closes, but she said for her, personally, it’s time.
