The Atlanta Zoning Review Board recently approved an upzoning request for an affordable housing proposal on Atlanta’s eastside, following months of pushback by some Kirkwood residents.

The proposal includes a 47-unit apartment building for unhoused seniors, along with services such as mental health support. The lot, located at 88 Howard St. NE, is currently vacant and owned by Turner Monumental AME Church, which is pursuing the development.

But last month, the surrounding NPU voted against supporting the proposal over concerns that included its relative density in a neighborhood largely zoned for single-family homes.
