A local committee and its supporters are pushing for a portion of East Cobb to become its own city.

On Thursday’s edition of “Closer Look,” Craig Chapin, the president of the East Cobb Cityhood Committee, told program host Rose Scott that East Cobb continues to grow and the committee is pushing for better management and more representation.

Chaplin, who has lived in the county for 50 years, said that if East Cobb becomes the City of East Cobb,  the smaller city would cover a 25-mile radius and would have a population of roughly 50,000 residents. He further explained that the smaller population would allow residents to have more say in what happens in their community.

“Instead of having … five [Cobb County commissioners and] you take 785,000 people divided by 5, we’re going to take 50,000 and divide by six,” said Chaplin.

Chaplin also shared the results of a feasibility study and the next steps in the city creation process.
