WABE’s podcast “Bottom of the Map” explores Southern Hip-Hop in expert detail. Music journalist Christina Lee and hip-hop scholar Dr. Regina Bradley are well-matched in their knowledge and passion for hip-hop.

Season 2 of “Bottom of the Map” is streaming now, and in a recent conversation with the hosts, Lois Reitzes asked Lee and Bradley about their takeaway from season one.

“Before I actually did podcasting, I had this vision in my head like, ‘Oh podcasting is just folks getting together in their basement, hitting record and just salvage whatever comes together,” Bradley said. “But it’s an actual process, and I really learned to appreciate the process and our production team.”

The first season was voted “Best New Local Podcast” by Atlanta Magazine in 2019. After demonstrating the building blocks of Southern hip-hop and it’s influence, this season will have an overarching theme focused on “The Branded South.”

“In the first episode we revisit the term ‘Dirty South’ and really break it apart in terms of what’s changed and why it’s important we still call it the ‘Dirty South,” Bradley said.

Lee continues, “When we were doing research on this term, I was really surprised to see that this term is still being used from wine companies to younger groups that are coming out today. My theory is that these groups still want to be very much a part of this hip-hop heritage.”
