Atlanta Animator Draws Connections For Fellow Artists

Alyssa Lewis and “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes discuss their shared passion for Bugs Bunny and other animated characters.

On the job, Alyssa Lewis focuses her talents on the delicate art of lip-synching for the FX animated television show “Archer.”

In her spare time, Lewis lends a helping hand to fellow animators in the Atlanta area and Georgia who are trying to break into, or move up in, the very competitive business.

Lewis explained her craft on “City Lights,” as well as her own animation resource company, My Animation Life, which attempts to foster the kinds of professional connections she says were vital for her career.

The native of Brooklyn said she’s known since she was a small child watching Bugs Bunny what she wanted to do with her life.

“It starts when your parents hand you a pen or a marker because you’re bored and they just want you to do something” Lewis said.

As a student on the Atlanta campus of the Savannah School of Art and Design, Lewis said she learned something just as important as the 2-D and stop motion animation techniques that are her specialties.

Networking was just one of the ways “I amped up what I could do” beyond animation, she said.

Digging deep into professional animators scene in has encouraged her to spread her knowledge of the industry. While Atlanta is known primarily for being the home of Cartoon Network, she said the area has many other smaller places for animators to do good work.

Lewis is a vice president of the Atlanta chapter of ASIFA, a professional animation organization that began in France.

This weekend, she’ll be among the contributors at the MomoCon convention in Atlanta, as part of the “Georgia Women in Animation” program.
