Atlanta Police Chief George Turner will retire after 35 years of service within the APD, city officials announced Wednesday.
Over the course of Turner’s leadership, Atlanta has seen a 27 percent decrease in crime since 2009. He implemented strategies to help foster a positive relationship between residents and officers and created new units and programs to address violent crime.
“Since his appointment as Police Chief six years ago, George Turner has served as a vital member of my cabinet,” said Reed in a statement. “Under his leadership, we have made significant progress toward our goal of making Atlanta one of the safest large cities in America.”
