On the “City Lights” series “Speaking of Comedy,” Atlanta’s funniest locals share insights on the perks and perils of their profession. This edition features comedian Amber Brenton originally from Carroll, Georgia.

Brenton officially started doing comedy a few years ago but has always been funny, making her family and friends laugh. “Every time I walk in the room, people just start laughing,” says Brenton. “Sometimes, I don’t even have to say anything. So one day, I just woke up and just decided, ‘I’m going to try standup.'”

She then called a videographer friend and told him about her new decision, telling him she wanted him to record it. She didn’t know where or how to begin, and he suggested she start in her garage and only invite family and friends.

“What we did was put out Eventbrite tickets for about 10 dollars, and it sold out in like 10 minutes,” Brenton said. “I was like, ‘Now I have to do it!’ And that was the best thing to ever… I’m glad I did it because now I’m the happiest. It’s my purpose.” Through the trials of initially establishing herself in the comedy scene, Brenton now travels the world and gets paid as a comedian professionally.
