Atlanta Film Festival Opens With ‘Dave Made A Maze’

Dave Made A Maze” is the opening night feature of the Atlanta Film Festival, which kicks off this Friday at the Plaza Theatre at 7 p.m.

Filmmaker Bill Watterson (not to be confused with the creator behind “Calvin and Hobbes”) is a self-described technophobe. It was 2001 before he even considered getting a pager. He said that he never really caught up, which is perhaps the cause or the result of his deep appreciation for tactile things.

“There’s no substitute for something you can hold in your hand,” said Watterson, who grew up watching films like “Labyrinth,” “King Kong,” and “Clash of the Titans. “Anytime there was a creature in stop motion, in miniature or puppet vein . . . it was real in such a way that made every movie so exciting.”

What he is saying makes perfect sense if you consider his new movie. As the “Dave Made A Maze” title suggests, the movie is about a guy name Dave who made a maze. And he gets trapped inside.

The film uses very minimal CGI, and all the intricate sets are made completely out of cardboard.
