As a founding Women’s Flat Track Derby Association member, Atlanta Roller Derby has been skating strong in our city since 2004. Last year, Senior Producer Kim Drobes caught up with skater Anna Benbrook, AKA Gucci Maime, who provided an overview of the sport.
Roller Derby has gone through many transformations over its almost 90-year existence. At one point, it was seemingly staged entertainment akin to professional wrestling. But since its revival in the early 2000s, the sport has become a showcase for serious athletic abilities. Roller Derby games are called “bouts.” If you’re considering going to watch about in person, Benbrook, AKA Gucci Maim, offered a little insight into how the sport is played and how the team stays safe on the track.
This Saturday, March 4th, Atlanta will host Virginia’s River City Roller Derby for a bout at the Yaarab Shrine Center Auditorium at 5 pm and 7:30 pm. You can find more information here.
