Atlanta’s Duet For Theremin And Lap Steel ‘Solve’ Experimental Music
A long-running avant-garde music group in Atlanta is celebrating over a decade together with a vinyl release as well as performances at the biggest experimental music festival in the Southeast.
Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel is comprised of Scott Burland and Frank Schultz, who took up their respective instruments in the unlikely duo in 2006 after performing together in a benefit show for Eyedrum. Since then, the group has released a number of recordings of their improvisations, but they approached “10,” their 2016 release, with the idea of intentionally making an album.
“We decided to do a release that we could have a little bit of fun in the studio with,” Schultz says.
Burland points out that the raw, cacophonous experiments they engaged in early in their history has developed a great deal.
“The roots are in experimental music, but I think that it’s transformed, where it’s no longer an experiment,” he says. “It’s an experiment that was proven.”
That album has now been remixed and mastered for a vinyl release as Duet prepares to perform at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee.
“What we’re doing is largely a D.I.Y. kind of a thing,” Burland explains, “and that’s charming and everything, but this is an opportunity to take it up a step.”
Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel will play a record release show for their album “Ten” March 10 at 6 PM at Sunbrimmer Records in Avondale Estates. The Big Ears Festival takes place in Knoxville, Tennessee, March 22-25.
