Bills Could Place New Regulations On Uber And Other Ridesharing Services

Strict new state regulations on ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft may be coming down the pipeline.

House Bill 190 would force most ridesharing drivers to more than double their current insurance standardsA separate bill, HB 224, would require them to submit to background checks.

“The proposed bills fail to recognize the new safety standard Uber has set in the industry and would make Georgia the most difficult state for its residents to access safe rides and economic opportunity through the Uber platform,” said Uber spokesman Taylor Bennett in a statement.

Republican Rep. Rich Golick, the sponsor of HB 190, insists he’s not out to get Uber, but he wants to err on the side of caution.

“A lot of the time what we’re worried about are the corner-cutters who come in and don’t have the sterling reputation that some other companies do and they’re the ones who wreak havoc and frankly make everyone look bad,” said Golick.

Similar legislation failed to pass last year.
