A historic staple of Atlanta cuisine has reopened following a two-month closure due to storm damage.

Mary Mac’s Tea Room was back in operation starting Wednesday after completing repairs made to the roof, which partially collapsed after heavy rainfall.

“We’re so excited to see all our loyal customers soon! It’s taken two long months and lots of hard work and dedication from our team, the city of Atlanta, and all of our partners to get here, and we are proud to announce we are reopening our doors with regular hours, starting tomorrow,” an Instagram post for the establishment read Tuesday evening.

Unspecified “much-needed updates” were also made to the eatery during its closure.

Mary Mac’s has maintained a reputation among lifelong Georgia residents and transplants alike throughout the years for its authentic Southern cuisine. Popular choices include fried chicken, Georgia peach cobbler and its sweet tea, which the restaurant has dubbed “Table Wine of the South”.

The restaurant has been in the same Ponce De Leon Avenue location since opening in 1945. It was one of 16 tearooms in the city at the time. Now it is the only one of its time still in operation, according to the restaurant’s website.

Dubbed “The Original Southern Tea Room”, Mary Mac’s has seen visits from various celebrities, political figures and athletes throughout the years, ranging from former President Jimmy Carter to music icon Beyoncé.

The restaurant started with only one dining room and has since expanded to six in a 13,000-square-foot space, making it one of the city’s largest restaurants, according to its website.

The restaurant thanked patrons for their support during the closure.

“Your warm wishes and kind words have kept us moving during this difficult process,” the Instagram post said. “We look forward to sharing our incredible Southern food and hospitality with you again soon.”
