Crews begin cleaning up Paulding County after weekend tornado

The National Weather Service has confirmed at least three tornadoes struck the state during last Friday’s storm. One of them in Paulding County was rated an EF-3 with winds up to 165 miles per hour. Crews in the county spent Monday cleaning up after the massive storm.

Some of the largest cleanup efforts are taking place at the Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport. Paulding County Administrator Michael Jones says the airport is estimated to have sustained at least five to six million dollars in damage.

“The hangers themselves will have to be demolished, they’re not salvageable, and there is metal debris, insulation and building material scattered all over the place.”

Jones says airport cleanup could be completed as early as Wednesday. In the meantime, efforts also underway in the county to clean up an elementary school which lost part of its roof and close to 100 homes that were affected by the storm.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency says statewide 30 homes were destroyed and more than 200 homes were damaged. Officials say an 83-year-old Fulton County woman was killed after seeking shelter in a storm drain.
