Dad’s Garage Kicks Off New Show Featuring Norwegian Talent

Dad’s Garage presents a brand new show this weekend, combining two of reality TV’s favorite things: competition and singing. It’s called Improv Idol and will feature a variety of musical challenges, finishing with a crowned winner.

The inspiration came from a show by Det Andre Teatret, an improv theater company in Oslo, Norway. Camila Frey is one of the founders of that company and joins Dad’s Garage for some bouts of improv.

Along with an improvisers, Frey is an actress, and Det Andre Teatret was started to appease her and her collaborator’s many interests.

“When we started, we quickly discovered that we wanted to do more than what we had been taught,” she said in an interview with Lois Reitzes. “We wanted to merge the best from theater and the best from improv.”

The result is a wide-variety of shows from comedies to dramas. One show, which they toured with through the U.S., is dramatic improvisations in the style of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. Regardless of tone, though, improv always follows the same rules.

“We talk a lot in improv that you should accept, just say yes to things,” said Frey. “You need to let go of your fear and your ego to achieve things.”

Frey and other Dad’s Garage improvisers appear on stage with “Improv Idol” this Friday at 8 p.m.
