Democrat Bernie Sanders In Atlanta For Fundraiser

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders makes his first campaign visit to Atlanta Friday.

The Vermont senator is hosting a fundraiser downtown at 200 Peachtree starting at 6 p.m.

Sanders has been making gains in the polls behind his opponent Hillary Clinton, and that could affect Clinton’s strategy in Georgia and neighboring states, says Andre Gillespie, associate professor of political science at Emory University.

“If Bernie Sanders is making the inroads that the polls suggest that he’s making, Hillary Clinton needs to use the South as a firewall,” Gillespie said.

She said Clinton has traditionally had strong support in the South, and among African-American and Latino voters.

The last time Democrats won the state was back in 1992 for Bill Clinton.

After Friday’s event, Sanders heads to South Carolina.
