Emory professor defends potential of AI
A group of artificial intelligence experts and industry leaders signed a letter earlier this week warning that AI poses an existential threat to human existence.
They warn AI could become more intelligent and more powerful than humans and, if we don’t take great care now, lead to the extinction of humans and the world.
Some of the biggest names in technology signed onto the statement including Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, and Geoffrey Hinton, a computer scientist known as the godfather of artificial intelligence.
But Rajiv Garg, associate professor of information systems and operation management at Emory’s Goizueta Business School, says the potential of AI outweighs the risks, as long as proper precautions are taken.
“A healthy dose of fear is always good but at the same time, keep in mind that if we misuse it, it can have negative effects,” said Garg.
He joined “All Things Considered” to talk about what is being done to mitigate the dangers posed by AI technology.
