Engineering a Safer Football Helmet for Atlanta and Elsewhere

Step onto Georgia State University’s football field during practice and you won’t be able to see GSU’s blue helmets on the players’ heads.

Instead, you’ll see a white padded cover, called the Guardian Cap. It’s a safety device that fits over the classic hard-shell helmet and it’s specially designed to soften any blows to the head that players may experience on the field.

The Guardian Cap was actually developed here in the Atlanta area by a local couple, Erin and Lee Hanson. We met up with them during one of GSU’s practices and asked them how these safety devices could make football a safer sport for little league, high school and college players.

We also talked with GSU Coach Trent Miles about the safety caps and why he’s having players wear them during practice.
