Georgia’s largest no-kill animal shelter and rescue organization is asking residents to be aware of scams and fraud in its name.

Furkids Animal Rescue & Shelter said in a Thursday press release that a recent case involved someone searching for his missing cat. After hanging up flyers, the pet owner was contacted by an unknown party impersonating a Furkids representative, who told the owner that his cat needed emergency surgery after being struck by a car. The scammer said the surgery would cost $2,700.

“The individual sent the funds, but after growing suspicious, visited Furkids in person — only to learn that the organization had never been in contact with him and did not have his cat,” the press release read.
