The director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation says there are more than 70 gangs, gang subsets across the state—and since the GBI Gang Task Force was created in 2019, it has investigated 843 gang-related or gang-motivated investigations

On Friday’s edition on “Closer Look,” Vic Reynolds, who heads the GBI Gang Task Force, told show host Rose Scott, that street gangs are defined as three or more people who are associated with one another committing criminal street gang activity.

“It’s not against the law to be in a criminal street gang in Georgia,” explained Reynolds.“It’s against the law when you are in a criminal street gang, and you commit activity that’s defined as criminal gang activity.”

During the conversation, Director Reynolds also discussed how the statewide task force is combating street gang activity–and reflected on the rise in violent crime amid the pandemic and efforts to combat it.
