Home Depot Co-Founder Making Big Impact In Atlanta Health Care

When Bernie Marcus had bypass surgery at Piedmont Hospital in Buckhead, the staff was great, he said. But the facility, in his opinion was not. Cardiac services were spread out, which meant patients had to travel to different floors.

Rather than complain, the 87-year-old gave $75 million to Piedmont for a new medical office tower. It would house the hospital’s cardiac services under one roof.

According to this week’s Atlanta Business Chronicle, that’s just one example of how Marcus’ personal life has influenced his philanthropy in recent years. Since 2002, the Home Depot co-founder has given $300 million to health care causes in the metro Atlanta area.

Recipients include The Shepherd Center, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Grady Health System.
