NPR's Tiny Desk concert series broadened its reach with Tiny Desk Contest

The creator of NPR's "Tiny Desk Concert," Bob Boilen, and producer Bobby Carter spoke with City Lights Senior Producer Kim Drobes about the series. (Courtesy of NPR)

NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series has brought musical joy to tight spaces since its inception in 2008. Created by Bob Boilen and currently produced by Bobby Carter, over 1,000 musical artists have sat at Bob’s tiny desk.

And in 2014, the team decided to open the door wider with the creation of the Tiny Desk Contest. The competition asks for unsigned fans and musicians to submit videos in hopes of being chosen to perform as part of the NPR music discovery series.
