The Georgia Ports Authority has shut down operations in Brunswick and Savannah in anticipation of Hurricane Dorian.

Executive Director Griff Lynch said they hope to re-start operations on Thursday afternoon once Dorian has passed. There are only four days a year when the ports are actually scheduled to be shut down. Labor Day, which was Monday, was one of them.

“Typically this, you know, this week would be a busy just recovering from the closure,” said Lynch.

Lynch said shutting down for two additional days because of Dorian’s threat is difficult, but necessary for safety reasons.

He said they spent Monday making preparations. Brunswick has one of the nation’s largest ports for cars and Lynch says the cars been moved to higher ground. He also says dozens of cranes in Savannah had to be secured and ships had to move out.

“Georgia ports are a major impact on the state economy,” said Lynch. “So, as the storm goes past we want to make sure we get the facility open as soon as possible after the storm.”

Lynch said he anticipates a backlog once things get going again.

“That’s why it’s critical for us to get back into position as quickly as possible so we can catch up and make sure the cargo flows to the stores as it needs to,” he said.
